John Rogler Obituary


John C. Rogler passed away peacefully on March 17th at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford New York. Born on September 21, 1927 in Providence, Rhode Island he was the son of Frederick and Annie (Howarth) Rogler. Graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in Providence in 1947. Obtained a B.S. in Poultry Science from the University of Rhode Island in 1951. Served from 1953 to 1955 in the US Army.
Received a M.S. and Ph.D. in Poultry science from Purdue University in 1953 and 1958 respectively. He then joined the faculty of the Animal Science Department at Purdue and promoted to full Professor of Poultry Nutrition in 1966.
Dr. Rogler retired in 1995 from Purdue with a distinguished record of research accomplishments over three decades. He was recognized in 1985 as the recipient of the American Feed Association Nutrition Research Award from the Poultry Science Association and was named a Fellow of that professional society in 1988. He was also named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Rogler served as major professor for 9 PhD and 8 MS students. His research program was both extensive and diverse by the fact he was the author of 121 journal papers and 69 published abstracts in over 24 different referred journals.
He was married in 1951 to Margaret Tamke who predeceased him in 2010. John had two sons: Jay who died in 2009 and Dick who he resided with in Nineveh, NY with wife Deborah and two grandsons, Karl and Kurt. He is survived by sister Patricia Clark, brother Fred Rogler, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister Helen and brother Robert.
John interests included bird hunting, attending Purdue sporting events, playing bridge and traveling with Margaret.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Service to follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. David Horner officiating. Burial to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
